Howard Lederer lived in a family of 5 where he liked participating in numerous card games when he was young. He found himself becoming very aggressive in these particular card games as he was playing his dad. After graduating from secondary school, Howard decided to place higher education on hold for a little while and headed to New York City to participate in some serious chess. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s first 2 years were tough as he would play many hours and don’t win a majority of the time. He made some extra cash by becoming an assistant for the poker players. He judged he might improve his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He brought about an attempt to get more sleep and focus more on the game.

The definite advancement in his skills began when he started playing at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable players would often challenge one another. He was able to access a few of the foremost minds in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would hone his cunning thinking abilities. Howard applied these strategic ideas to the game of NL holdem.

Howard Lederer also helped his sister Annie Duke master poker. She was a superb student of the game as she constantly asked questions about how to make the proper choice. He told Annie to head out to Vegas and compete in the WSOP competition. She is one of the strongest female players the poker world today. Howard Lederer relocated to Sin City in 1993 and competed in cash games for the subsequent 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, he made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
