Howard Lederer lived in a family of 5 where he liked playing different card games at a young age. He discovered himself getting really aggressive in these card games while playing his dad. After finishing secondary school, Howard made a decision to put higher education on hold for a little while and headed to New York to compete in some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s initial two years were rough as he would play countless hours and lose a majority of the time. He made some additional cash by becoming an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he might better his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to get more rest and focus more on poker.
The definite improvement in his skills began when he started wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest players would frequently wager against each other. He was able to access a few of the greatest players in chess. With their help, he would tweak his strategic thinking skills. Howard used these strategy ideas in the game of NL Texas Holdem.
Howard also helped his sister Annie Duke master the game of poker. She was a superb student of the game as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the correct decision. Howard told Annie to head out to Las Vegas and play in the WSOP tournaments. Annie is one of the strongest women players the poker world has ever seen. He moved to Sin City in 1993 and competed in cash games for the next 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, Howard decided to play more tournaments.
